Why Sunhaven Academy Is Needed
Every year, tens of thousands of children in the U.S. enter foster care or live without a permanent family. Many spend years moving between homes, facing uncertainty, trauma, and instability. For far too many, aging out of the system means entering adulthood without the support, guidance, or security every child deserves. Sunhaven Academy is planned to fill that gap providing a safe, stable, and nurturing environment where children can grow, learn, and thrive. They will be supported, empowered, and given opportunities to succeed. From tradtional educational to outdoor enrichment, as well as Emotional and mental health support, Sunhaven Academy is designed to give every child the foundation for a brighter future.

Multidome Learning Center
Primary Learning Dome ( Center Dome )
The central dome is designed as a multidisciplinary academic hub. Perimeter classrooms serve foundational education subjects such as language arts, mathematics, history, and cultural studies. The mid-level floors house faculty offices, tutoring alcoves, and breakout rooms for small-group learning.
At its core lies a tiered library and media center, illuminated by overhead skylights and wrapped in panoramic interior windows. This space serves as the intellectual heart of the building, quiet, contemplative, and visually open.

Creative Arts & Innovation Dome ( Left Dome )
The left dome is dedicated to creativity and construction. Inside, students access fully equipped art studios for drawing, painting, digital illustration, and sculpting. Adjacent to the art spaces is the Innovation Lab, a makerspace featuring 3D printers, fabrication tools, robotics equipment, and engineering workstations. Sound-isolated music rooms and seminar spaces line the second tier, providing room for experimentation, collaboration, and performance across artistic disciplines. The open, circular shape promotes a sense of inspiration and creative flow, with wide exterior windows providing consistent natural light ideal for artistic work.

Sciences & Technology Dome ( Right Dome )
The right dome houses the academy’s STEM facilities. It includes specialized laboratories for biology, chemistry, and earth science, each built with proper ventilation and equipment storage. The dome’s second tier supports technology classrooms for coding, data science, and computer engineering. A series of discrete research pods allow students to pursue individual and group scientific projects, while upper levels hold observation decks used for astronomy nights, environmental monitoring, and scientific exhibitions. This dome is built to foster curiosity, experimentation, and hands-on discovery.

The Integrative Youth Care Home

This is a modern, two-story cylindrical community home designed to support 40 individual private bedrooms arranged around the outer circular perimeter. The exterior shows a repeating pattern of windows for each bedroom, giving every resident a defined personal space with natural light and privacy. The building's center is an open communal core, meant for shared living, social interaction, and group activities. A spiral staircase sits at the very center, connecting the two floors with an open, welcoming feel. The roof features multiple skylights, allowing abundant natural sunlight to illuminate the inner communal areas throughout the day. This creates a bright, uplifting environment intended to promote positivity and well-being. On the ground floor, there is a large kitchen area, designed to serve many residents at once and support family-style dining and community bonding. The architectural style is clean, smooth, and unique, using rounded geometry and soft color bands that wrap around the circular shape. The design balances private personal space with warm, shared community life, making it especially suitable for foster children transitioning into healthier, stable environments, allowing privacy when needed while still encouraging integration and connection.

Campus Headquarters
At the center of the building is the Administration Hub, which functions as the operational core of Sunhaven Academy. This area includes offices for school leadership, academic directors, support staff, and essential administrative services. Modeled after a modern high school office, it provides staff workspaces, private meeting rooms, and a student services counter to support enrollment, records, communication, and day-to-day campus operations. The central placement of the Administration Hub allows it to seamlessly coordinate with both the Physical Wellness Wing and the Mental Wellness Wing, ensuring smooth communication, efficient services, and a unified support system for all students and staff.
Physical and Mental Wellness Center

The Physical and Mental Wellness Center serves as Sunhaven Academy’s hub for student health, recovery, and emotional support. Designed with a calm, modern layout, the center provides comprehensive care through two integrated wings. The Physical Wellness Wing is in the left wing of the building which includes a nurse’s clinic, urgent care room, diagnostic area, physical therapy space, and a prescription office to support students’ day-to-day physical and mental medical and medication needs and long-term fitness. The Mental Wellness Center is in the right wing of the building and offers private counseling rooms, a psychiatrist’s office, a group therapy room, and a mindfulness studio for stress relief and emotional regulation. A sensory-friendly retreat space and outdoor healing garden provide quiet, restorative environments. Together, these spaces ensure that every student has access to compassionate care, proactive health services, and a safe environment for both physical and mental well-being.

Residential Staff Housing Unit
The Residential Staff Housing Unit is a purpose-built, community-oriented residence designed to house all 80 staff members on campus while maintaining architectural continuity with the Integrative Youth Care Home. Its rounded, low-profile form and layered horizontal design create a sense of stability, cohesion, and warmth, integrating seamlessly into the surrounding campus. Each staff member is provided with a private bedroom and private bathroom, ensuring personal space and comfort, while communal kitchens and shared laundry facilities support a dormitory-style living environment that encourages connection and collaboration. Thoughtfully arranged circulation and shared spaces balance privacy with community, reflecting the campus’s integrative philosophy and supporting staff well-being, accessibility, and long-term engagement within the residential community.

The Agricultural Learning Area
The Agricultural Learning Area is a dedicated, hands-on education zone designed to connect students with sustainability, responsibility, and the natural world. Anchored by a central barn, the space serves as a hub for animal learning, skill development, and daily stewardship activities. Next to the barn are four greenhouse structures placed in a row that support year-round growing, experimentation, and environmental education. Around this area, students engage in gardening, farming practices, animal care, and land cultivating in a structured, supportive setting. The program emphasizes practical life skills, teamwork, accountability, and an understanding of food systems and ecological balance. Interaction with nature provides a calming, grounding environment that supports emotional well-being while reinforcing routine and purpose. The Agricultural Learning Area blends education, responsibility, and care for living systems - offering students meaningful work, therapeutic engagement, and real-world skills that contribute to independence and long-term success.
